It is well known that Los Cabos is a world class golf tourism destination. It is blessed with a number of world clas golf courses. Between public and private courses there is a wide offer of options for the golf enthusiast.
But how did it all started?
Back in the forties and the fifties Cabo was the hidden spot to go for Hollywood royalty. A place where they could vacation in complete privacy, with no cameras or reporters to be on the lookout for. They would arrive in private planes and spend their time mostly in Palmilla, fishing and relaxing in this piece of paradise.
This all changed in 1974 with the Tijuana-Cabo Interstate road "Highway 1" called in spanish "Carretera transpeninsular Benito Juárez" wich provided a way to get to Los Cabos by car. Although is not tha easy since it's a 1,063 miles ride. Anyway since then Cabo was now accesible to the rest of the world.
Fonatur is the Mexican tourism promotion branch of the government. The first Fonatur director Don Antonio Enriquez Savignac asked architect Joe Finger and landscape designer Mario Schejtan to create the first golf project in Los Cabos. This project was initially called "San Jose del Cabo golf club" later Mayan Palace golf course and today known as Vidanta golf club. This first golf course in San Jose del Cabo was built in 1987.
The second golf course designed and built by Fonatur was in Loreto in 1991. This camp was renovated by David Duval a few years ago.
In 1992 Visionary Don Koll brought Jack Nicklaus to Los Cabos to build his first golf course in Latin America at the Palmilla resort. This is the Palmilla Arroyo & Mountain Course golf course. And it was finished in 1992.
In 1994 we got a new one: The Cabo del Sol golf . This course is considered one of the best Jack Nicklaus creations. Also this new project established a new standard for golf courses in the area.
In the same year, 1994 we also got the Cabo San Lucas Country Club. The original nine was designed by Roy Dye, brother of Pete Dye, and was completed by Roy’s son Matt Dye, a second generation golf course architect.
